Kidnapping Nature was created for the ninth annual Cool Art Café exhibition in the summer of 2006, in conjunction with the music festival Couleur Café. The theme for the exhibition this time was "Vegetal Art" and some 24 artists from Europe, Africa and the USA participated in it. The festival, which was held in a large old railway depot, offered plenty of ethnic cuisine, information on humanitarian anti-war campaigns, as well as music and visual art events. The three-day festival attracted some 70 000 visitors.

My part in the exhibition consisted of two sculptures and three large photographs documenting my previous projects, hanging inside the exhibition hall. Kidnapping Nature, on the other hand, took three weeks to complete in front of the exhibition space. The idea was to finalise the artwork as a kind of a performance, during the festival itself. The material for the work was Finnish willow; however, the trunks for the "woods" were obtained in the locality. When illuminated through the warm summer nights, the expression of the artwork seemed softer - the shade of the work lured one away from the blaze of the floodlights.

The conceptual starting point for my artwork evokes a forest theme that I have worked on before. When worked into a large size object, the cubic form, raised up on the trunks, contrasts the apparent chaos of the organic materials with the minimalist exterior shape. The title of the work lends itself to some irony, too - an orthodox school of environmental or earth art might not approve of the long freight of the materials from one location to another, nor the 5500 screws required for the structure of the work. In this instance, however, the concept of "dematerialisation" is apt: the artwork was displayed and finally completed on the last night of the festival.

Kidnapping Nature valmistui Couleur Café - musiikkifestivaalin yhteydessä pidettyyn perinteiseen yhdeksänteen Cool Art Café - taidenäyttelyyn kesällä 2006. Näyttelyn teemana oli tällä kertaa "Vegetal Art" ja siihen osallistui 24 taiteilijaa Euroopasta, Afrikasta ja Amerikasta. Musiikin ja kuvataiteen tarjonnan lisäksi vanhalle laajalle ratapiha- ja varikkoalueelle pystytetty tilaisuus tarjosi runsaasti etnistä ruokaa ja mm. humanitaarista infoa sodanvastaisesta työstä. Kolmipäiväisen festivaalin aikana alueella kävi 70 000 vierailijaa.

Oma osuuteni näyttelyyn koostui kahdesta veistoksesta ja kolmesta isosta dokumenttivalokuvasta aikaisemmista projekteistani - näyttelytilaan sisälle ripustettuna. Kidnapping Nature puolestaan valmistui kolmessa viikossa paikan päälle näyttelytilan edustalle. Ideana oli, että työn viimeistely tapahtui näytösluontoisesti itse festivaalin aikana. Työn materiaali on suomalaista pajua, mutta "metsikön" rungot on hankittu paikan päältä. Valaistuna työn ilme keskikesän helteillä yöaikaan pehmeni - työn varjo houkutteli pois valonheittimien paahteesta.

Työn ajatuksellinen lähtökohta kertaa jälleen aikaisemmin työstämääni metsä-teemaa. Suureen kokoon työstettynä kuutiomainen muoto ylös runkojen varaan nostettuna rinnastaa orgaanisen materiaalin näennäisen kaoottisuuden ja työn ulkoisen pelkistetyn muodon. Hieman ironiaa löytyy myös itse työn nimestä - puhdasoppinen maa- ja ympäristötaide ei ehkä sulata materiaalin rahtaamista pitkiä matkoja paikasta toiseen, tai työn rakenteen vaatimia 5500 ruuvia. Tässä tapauksessa sen sijaan sanonta "materiaaliltaan katoava" on osuva - työ oli esillä paikan päällä valmiiksi työstettynä viimeisen festivaali-illan.
